Finest Hour - Card Number 75: Defy Darkness

From small cracks in the swamp around them, something was bursting forth from below, wreathed in dark flames from the magic worked by their possessed friend. Seeing what they exactly were was impossible from the darkness, and the more there were the denser the dark around them seemed. The light that Starswirls spell shed upon the swamp grew dimmer with an alarming haste.

“I don’t know, Twilight, but it takes really dark magic to make darkness this impenetrable.”

Taking out her hammer, Applejack prepared for the worst: Whatever was rising from the swamp before them. But she still had time to talk. With a hammer between her teeth.

“Who could have known that? Fancy thinking aside, we have bigger problems right now!”

As Starswirls spell failed completely, the darkness engulfed them, preventeing them from seeing anything. Then Rarity said what they were all thinking.

“What are those things? And am I the only one hearing them coming closer?”

As Starswirl tried to reignite the light he had created, barely managing to make enough light for it to illuminate the group, a cry was heard from the swamp. Then another one, and then many more, a choir of rasping scream of something that should never had been. They immediately clumped together even further.

“This is bad… how has she become this powerful? My spell is useless!”

The Twilights responded in unison, surprised over the old unicorn’s words.

“What? YOU, among all of us here…?”

“I… I am not perfect. Where she has had the last thousand years to improve and learn, I haven’t. I didn’t even get a proper breakfast this morning.”

“Well, then its time for the younger ones to take over. I, well, we think we have the general idea of your “Personal Sun” spell, that is, we have read about it, but seeing it in action helped a lot. Ready, twin?”

“We might only understand the half of the spell, but with two of us, that should make a complete spell!”

“And if the last years in Ponyville have taught us anything, it is to remain hopeful, no matter the circumstances. Once we have light, we can find a way out of this!”

“EEK! Something cold and wet just touched me… can you hurry up the speech, Twilight?”

The two unicorns unleashed a burst of magic, shaping it into the form of a glowing orb above them, acting as a makeshift sun. As the soft, golden light repelled the magical darkness, they finally had a chance to look at their adversaries. Rarity immediately smacked the one that had touched her, sending it crawling away, hissing at her.

“Is THAT what they look like?… I preferred the darkness!”

“Not now, Rarity, have you seen how many there are?”

“If by “how many”, Applejack, you mean too many, then yes.”

Kinda a combo of Untamed Might and Stream of Life, done in a nice transition from green to white concepts. :)
Maybe give the creature lifelink? With your way though, even if the damage is prevented, you gain X life.
Epic artwork and back story for the card! :D

I actually thought of giving the creature lifelink instead, but that would not work well with creatures already having lifelink, or if the damage in some way would be prevented.
(as a hidden bonus: Look at the artwork for this card, then at what they get up agains on the next card)

i think it would be best if it was "blocking" creature, if it's blocking a black creature.
Zhantora Dec 8, 2012  Hobbyist Writer
As it is right now, it works both ways, allowing you to save a creature, if it is in a bad spot. Making it work only if blocking a black creature would be a bit too situational, if that is what you mean.

The only reason i say that it should be against black creatures is because there's a card called "repel darkness" and it basically does the same thing that this card does...

That is so white.

Could be blocking or blocked creature.

Besides, it is kind of rare to see Common spells with X on the mana cost that provides more than a simple thing.

This card (with the blocked or blocking) could be a good uncommon. Not constructed usable, but a nice card for every sealed format.

I like the card. But as I said, this is definitely not for constructed.

Blocking or blocked? Good suggestion.

And as you said, not constructed viable, but not all has to be, as long as it is playable in some sort of way. (outside of convoluted combos like Razor Boomerang)

I didn't sayd it is bad to be only limited usable.

There are lots of cards that are not constructed that I like very much:
Sheoldred, Sunblast Angel, Storm Crow, Enclave Cryptologist, Homicidal Seclusion, etc.

A set needs cards for both formats. The only thing I hate, is cards that are terrible in both!
By that I mean craps like: Goblin Piker, Canyon Minotaur, and all those stupid cards that are nothing more than design lazyness (I still wonder how you and me alone can create decent cards for a set, and at the same time a company full of workes releases sets with tons of ridiculous cards)

Which is also the reason almost no "vanilla" creatures at all will be in this set, they are too "easy" to make, and I would rather make something a bit more interesting.
